Eating Difficulties and LGBTQ+ Mental Health

This introductory workshop presentation will introduce key theories, considerations and important clinical implications of eating difficulties and the impact this can have on LGBTQ+ clients. Examples will be discussed, and in response to participant feedback from previous events, there will be additional space for group discussion.

This event is suitable for anyone with an interest in eating difficulties and/or eating disorders, and especially working with or managing eating difficulties for LGBTQ+ people. This event is ideal for therapists, psychologists (including trainees/aspiring), occupational therapists, social workers, mental health nurses, teachers, youth workers, support workers, lecturers and anyone else that works with LGBTQ+ people.

About the event organiser & presenter:

Dr Brendan J Dunlop (BSc Hons, ClinPsyD, FHEA, CPsychol) (he/him) is a Principal Clinical Psychologist in the NHS and a Deputy Director for Research and Clinical Lecturer in Clinical Psychology on The University of Manchester’s clinical psychology training programme. In his NHS role, Dr Dunlop works within the clinical leadership team for the Associate Psychological Practitioners workforce. In his university role he teaches and supervises research on LGBTQ+ mental health and supervises Trainee Clinical Psychologists delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. In addition, Dr Dunlop works in an independent capacity providing psychological therapy to young people and adults, many of whom are from the LGBTQ+ communities. He is Associate Editor of the academic journal Psychology and Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice. Dr Dunlop’s debut book The Queer Mental Health Workbook (the first-of-its-kind LGBTQ+ self-help resource) published worldwide on 21st March 2022. Any reference to potentially personal identifiable information has been/will be deliberately changed. After providing informed consent to Dr Dunlop, clients were offered remuneration in the form of a discount to their therapy. This was only offered after they had provided informed consent, so as to not unduly influence their decision to share or not share such anonymised accounts. For this reason, to respect clients, these live events will not be recorded.
